Final Post; Foreshadowing
A good example of foreshadowing in all the light we cannot see is the character Major Reinhold von Rumpel, a Nazi treasure-hunter, set on hunting down the sea of flames, a beautiful stone that Marie-Laure father has taken with them to Saint Malo to protect. Many villains are usually described as brutes who often use violence to get their ways, often too impatient to get what they want. Rumpel is the complete opposite from that, when he is in Paris tracking down the stone, he makes the director who knows more then he is saying about stone wait for hours with him in his office until the director cannot bear another minute and eventually cracks. The director ends up telling the plans of hiding the stone, by replicating the stone into 3 identical stones, to be sent to different locations around the country.
In this moment in the story we have yet to see the main foreshadow, not until the climax of the book do we see this foreshadow. Marie-Laure's father and uncle Eitenne are both taken captive, leaving Marie-Laure completely alone. Rumpel finds the location of the real stone and breaks into the house where Marie-Laure is. Marie-Laure has a very clever hiding spot for herself and the stone, which was created by her uncle in a closet, which no ordinary person would be able to find. As we have seen earlier in the story; Rumpel is no ordinary villain thanks to the foreshadowing. He is unaware that Marie-Laure is still in the house, but is patient enough to continue searching for the stone, when others would have given up long ago. Marie-Laure is running out of food and water, and is seems hopeless that Marie-Laure will be able to get out of this situation. Rumpel's intense patience makes this entire situation very tense and excruciating, all thanks to the foreshadowing.
A good example of Rumpel's patience is on page 176. Rumpel says; " Waiting is a kind of war. You simple tell yourself that you must not lose".
